Dr. Bradley G. Klein
Dr. Brad Klein is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience in the
Dept.
of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at the Virginia-Maryland
Regional
College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. He is course leader
for
Veterinary Neurobiology and for General Neurochemistry. Dr. Klein
has
done a great deal of research on the function of the somatosensory
(touch)
system, specifically, the trigeminal system, which carries touch
sensations
from the face. His current work focuses on the role of possible
environmental
triggers of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Klein has employed neuroanatomical,
neurophysiological,
neurochemical and behavioral techniques in his research. When not at
work,
he keeps busy with his wife, three sons, running, skiing and playing
the
electric guitar.
Some of Dr. Klein's past and current research projects:
- immediate reorganization of somatosensory processing in the
trigeminal brainstem after peripheral nerve damage
- morphological changes in human trigeminal nerve following
traumatic injury
- the role of environmental chemicals, especially pesticides,
as triggers of Parkinson's disease
- the interaction of pesticides and stress in Gulf War Syndrome
- improved visualization and localization of the neural substrates
of chemically induced Parkinsonism
Some of Dr. Klein's past and current teaching projects:
- development and maintenance of this Web site
- development of interactive instructional modules for studying
sheep brain anatomy
- authorship of chapters on neural signal generation and
synaptic transmission in Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals, 12th
edition
- co-editor-in-chief and Neurophysiology section editor for
Cunningham & Klein: Textbook of Veterinary Physiology,
4th edition
