Plant Description:

1. Fleshy leaves are filled with gelatinous (mucilaginous) material used as a skin moistener. Surface of leaf covered with a tough, membranous layer (skin)

Toxic Principle:

1. Latex material beneath skin of plant called barbaloin. Affects gut and kidneys.

Disease:

1. Problem in dogs, cats, lizards, and birds

2. Onset time 6-12 hours

3. Vomiting, diarrhea, depression, red colored urine due to presence of toxic substance in the urine

Treatment:

1. Give fluids and a coating agent to protect the gut
