Plant Description:

1. Amanita, spp generally have a bulbous base in the ground, a thick white stem, and a large cap with gills on the underside. Cap can be white to yellowish brown (copper). Some varieties have white or yellowish wart-like scales on surface of cap.

Toxic Principle:

1. Several may be present and can affect central nervous system, liver, or kidneys

Disease:

1. Neurotoxic syndrome

      a) Onset time is 15-30 minutes

      b) See salivation, urination, defection, sweating, may see asthma-like breathing

      c) Constructed pupils, blurred disturbed vision

      d) Early depression, then excitation, muscle spasms, hallucinations

2. Gastrointestinal Syndrome

      a) Onset time is 6-12 hours

      b) Violent vomiting, severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, dehydration, dilated pupils

      c) Rapid liver and kidney failure

Treatment:

1. Neuro syndrome- physostigmine better than atropine

2. Gastrointestinal Syndrome- fluids and treat for liver and kidney failure
