Plant Description:

1. Cultivated plant in SE United States, can be up to 6 feet tall

2. Lower leaves are broad at base, oblong in shape

      a) leaves come off stem opposite

      b) upper leaves are lanceolate in shape

      c) green early in year, turning yellow as they ripen

3. Tubular flower that is white, yellow, or pink color

Toxic Principle:

1. Nicotine is the primary alkaloid causing toxicity in the nervous system

Disease:

1. Puppies most frequently poisoned animal; onset rapid

2. Affected animals shake, tremble, or twitch

3. Nausea, salivation, irritation of mouth and stomach

4. Become weak, may stagger, develop respiratory problems

5. Heart rate and blood pressure erratic

Treatment:

1. Remove residual tobacco from mouth or stomach

2. Assist respiration as required

3. Stabilize heart and blood pressure
