Plant Description:

1. Perennial shrub; grows wild in tropical and subtropical areas; most commonly seen as potted plant at Christmas season

2. Leaves with toothed or lobed margins

3. Flowers are tiny in tight groups at top of plant

Toxic Principle:

1. Called Euphorbin- present in the milky sap (juice) and causes irritation of the gut, skin, and mucous membranes of the eye

Disease:

1. Usually see problems in puppies or kittens but is not a serious problem

2. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, conjunctivitis

3. Irritation of the gut and mucous membranes of the eye (from rubbing contaminated fur/hair by eyes)

Treatment:

1. Administer coating agents for gut

2. May require fluids and other symptomatic care
