10. Nerve root: paired bundles of nerve tissue that exit the spinal cord at each spinal cord segment. Surrounded by dura mater, arachnoid membrane and cerebrospinal fluid. Consists of ventral and dorsal spinal nerves, a dorsal root ganglion. In the lumbosacral region, nerve roots are elongated because the spinal cord stops growing before the vertebrae do. Branch into ventral and dorsal spinal nerves at the intervertebral foramen. Compression of nerve roots is the most important factor causing pain and dysfunction in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral disease. <Back
